someone like me with a strange story ofcoming to the united states from india and seeking an american traditional formof music, you have to constantly ask yourself, am i out of my mind? ♫ don't hold back. ♫from your head down to your feet, baby ... starting out, i wanted to make a statement that i was a strong traditional blues artist. i wanted to be playing the blues and nobody to even wonder where i came from. but i would always find myself singing these bollywood songs, from my childhood.
these songs, they are national treasures in india and singers that sang them are legends. i started picking out songs, going, oh, this one might be a good one to maybe blues up a little more. to sing these songs in hindi with a very chicago blues sound is strange on the face of it. but a lot of bollywood especiallyfrom the fifties, sixties, that era was heavily influenced by western music. welcome to little lou's.
this is our thursday night blues party. i had no intention of being a musician. ♫ baby since you've been gone. i came to the united states to be asoftware engineer. i went to college, landed a regular job. but i always had this yearning to be this wild musician. i think it's one of the things that'skept me going. whether it's practice, booking gigs, or thinking about songs to write,
i've always kept myself involved in music. and with this project, aki goes tobollywood, to me it was the coming together of the music i discovered in theunited states and my musical roots growing up in india. so both worlds. i'm singing these songs that i love and i'm singing them with arrangements that i love now. this is me, trying to present anhonest art form
that speaks to my journey.
