Pod. Initially presumed to be a "supergroup", featuring as they did past and/or future members of the Throwing Muses, Belly, the Perfect Disaster, Honey Tongue and Slint, The Breeders turned out in fact to be basically Pixies' bassist Kim Deal and a shifting group of backing musicians. Deal had already written a couple of songs for the Pixies, most notably Surfer Rosa's stand out track "Gigantic", and Pod confirmed that she was a genuine talent in her own right. Despite being less polished (and less successful) than its follow-up Last Splash, the Steve Albini-produced Pod is--though messy--a minor masterpiece. No singles were released from the album, but highlights include a cover of the Beatles' "Happiness Is a Warm Gun" and the super-cute bubblegum of "Fortunately Gone". --Ronita Dutta #
