Mozart: The Marriage of Figaro. Judging by the sound alone, this 1955 Glyndebourne Figaro was a "naturalistic" if far from a lacklustre production. The focus on Figaro's justifiable quest for revenge over the lecherous Count at times threatens to overbalance the commedia del'arte lightness of Mozart's sparkling comedy. The remastered studio recording favours the singers; the orchestra is subdued and often low in the mix, but it does deliver the Overture's clear promise to reveal a modern-minded confident Gui with an able and willing ensemble at his disposal. The sonority of Almaviva (Calabrese)'s authoritative bass remains locked in a vocal duel with an equally assured Figaro (Bruscanini) nicely contrasted by Hugues Cuenod's Basilio, a delightfully inoffensive velvet tenor. Jurinac's Countess laments her plight with glassy pure tone that is slightly under-energised--possibly due to the deliberate, serene tempi of her arias. Sciutti is a glittering Susanna. Stevens' Cherubino is wonderfully animated in the recitatives, but sounds like an older woman in the passionate arias. The action is refreshingly and humorously hurried forward in the recitatives by an insistent Raymond Leppard, whose "silent movie" continuo playing is incomparable. Although this recording probably would lose out to the competition as a first-time buy, it's a delightful period-piece. --Yngvil V.G. #Mozart #Marriage #Figaro
