this jetty is the longest jetty in the southern hemisphere. and it currently stands at 1,841 metres in length. she said that it’s 1,841 metres in length. she could also have said that it’s 1,841 metres long or that its length is 1,841 metres. back in 1865, there was very little infrastructure into the region. there was very little infrastructure – that’s things like roads and railways. they really needed a jetty and a place for the produce to go in and out. notice that she said ‘produce’.
things that are made or grown are ‘produce’, but the verb for making or growing is ‘produce’. so you produce produce. another way of saying ‘produce’ is products. they did ship a couple of other products, the main one being coal. tourist vessels actually stopped here, even way back then way back then means a long time ago. in 1972, the jetty ceased its operations as a commercial jetty and the state government of the day actually earmarked about $500,000 to destroy the jetty. ‘earmarked’ means set aside for a purpose.
the town decided that was not the best thing to do or ‘not the way to go’. now, the community of busselton decided that that was not the way to go and since that point they've been looking after the jetty and raising funds to do maintenance as well.â
