Let Them Talk
today i'm at the cafe i've decided toescape the school for a while. it's not students - they're fantastic it's ratherthe red tape is not my cup of tea and yes i like mixing my metaphors anywayi've got my coffee that's a no-brainer and my croissant which in french they call a "croissant". you'veprobably guessed that this video is all about english expressions i hope youlike it anyway i've got a note go now. where am i going? i've got to see a man about a dog. see you later hello and welcome to letthemtalk thechannel that goes deeper into everything about the english language and todayi've got ten expressions for you and
these are my personal favourites or atleast ones that i use all the time. all of them are useful and are suitable in anumber of situations and where i know the history of the expression i'llexplain that too. so let's get started and the first expression is "to have awhale of a time" yes "a whale of a time" you know a whale? the big fish in theocean except it's not fish it's a mammal anyway all this means is to have a greattime. to enjoy oneself very much so for example "my holiday in vietnam wasamazing i had a whale of a time" or "the party was great we had a whale of a time" why "awhale of a time" i'm not sure i think it's something to do with whalers in the19th century enjoying themselves too much
anyway i like to use it because it makesme think of whales splashing and jumping around in the ocean enjoying themselvesrather than being killed by a whaling harpoon which is much less funny anyway also connected to having a good time isthe next expression "to paint the town red" which means to go out and have anextravagant and crazy time let's look at an example "hey john what you want to dothis evening?" "well i thought i might stay in and defrost thefreezer maybe watch the documentary on channel 8 about mountain goat"" " no idon't do that i want to do something crazy i want to go out i want to party iwanna dance or to stay up all night i
want to paint the town red". "okay pleaseyourself" and the next expression is "wakey-wakey smell the coffee" and you canuse this expression to someone who doesn't realize what's happening especiallywhen it's obvious to everyone else of course coffee makes you wake up and fastand helps you see what's happening so let's look at some examples. "the light'sgreen the light's green wakey-wakey smell the coffee" "this thing they call theinternet do you think that one day it will be important in people's lives". " italready is wakey-wakey smell the coffee"
and the next expression is "mumbo-jumbo"and it simply means nonsense for example "it's a full moon tonight andyou're a sagittarius you shouldn't go out". ""what is this astrology mumbo-jumbo?" "ok this is my legal contract 'the partyin the first part shall be known in this contract as a party in the first partthe party in the second part shall be known in this contract as the party inthe second part' what does it mean? this is just mumbo jumbo" and i did someresearch and apparently it comes from the mandingan language and it's been inthe english language for about 200 years and the next expression is "it's ano-brainer" that's right "it's a
no-brainer"and this means that the answer to the question is so obvious that it doesn'trequire any thought that is that you hardly need to use your brain okay. sofor example "the train takes eight hours and cost 400 euros and the plane takesone hour and costs 75 euros which one shall we take?". "it's a no-brainer we'lltake the plane". "i've just been offered a new job double the salary and i get to travel around the world will i take it? yeah it's a no-brainer? and thenext expression is "the world is my oyster "or the world is your oyster orsomebody's oyster anyway an oyster is a
sea creature you know which is inside arocky shell and some people open it up and put a lemon juice and eat it but notmy thing anyway what this means is that you have endlesspossibilities you can do whatever you want so for example "you're youngyou're beautiful you're qualified go out there the world is your oyster you cando anything" and the expression comes from shakespeare actually the merrywives of windsor and by the way if you know london you know that if you travelon public transport in london you need an oyster card and i think that it mightbe related to this expression because with the oyster card you can go whereveryou want and do whatever you want or it
may be because it just looksa bit like an oyster and the next expression is "it's better than a kick inthe teeth" that's right "it's better than a kick in the teeth" and all this meansis it's better than nothing so for example "if i had one more number right iwould have won ten million pounds in the lotteryinstead i've just won one hundred pounds well it's better than a kick in theteeth". "this year i have to work most of the summer i won't have a longsummer holiday i've only got one week oh
well! better than a the kick in the teeth " the next expression is "i've got to see a man about a dog" and you use expression whenyou have to leave a place and you don't want to tell people where you are goingeither it's a secret or it's just not very interesting to explain. so forexample "it's only 9:00 p.m. where are you going?" "well i've got see man about a dog" "you're two hours late where have you been?" "yeah i had to see a man about dog" the next expression is "to go dolally" which just means to go crazy so
for example "you're giving up your job tobecome a monk have you gone dolally?" "what you want to swim across theatlantic ocean have you gone dolally?" anyway theexpression comes from when the british were in india and the soldiers who wentcrazy were sent to a sanatorium in the town of deolali and the next expression is "red tape" lookat all these forms i have to fill in all these rules and regulations that seemunnecessary and that's exactly what red tape means unnecessary administrationand believe me there is a lot of that in france all these forms that you have tofill in that we don't really need is it
the same in your country?anyway the expression comes from charles v of spain at the beginning of thesixteenth century where they started tying important court documents with redtape that's it and if you have any favourite expressions in english or inyour own language then let us know in the comments and thank your watchingstay mellow don't go doolally and i'll see you in the next video
Let the Heartaches Begin
i was down my dreams were wearing thin when you're lost where do you begin? my heart always seemed to drift from day to day looking for the love that never came my way then you smiled and i reached out for you i could tell you were lonely too one look and then it all began for you and me the moment that we touched i knew that there would be
two less lonely people in the world and it's gonna be fine out of all the people in the world i just can't believe you're mine in my life where everything was wrong something finally went right now there's two less lonely people in the world tonight just to think what i might have missed
looking back how did i exist i dreamed, still i never thought i'd come this far but miracles come true, i know 'cause here we are tonight i fell in love with you and all the things i never knew seemed to come to me somehow baby, love is here and now there's ooooooh~
two less lonely people two less lonely people in the world tonight two less lonely people in the world ~~

Manassas. Thanks largely to input from Flying Burrito Brother Chris Hillman, Stills's 1972 release is more of an ensemble work than any of his other excursions or those from his friends David Crosby and Graham Nash. This band of famous session players, drawn together by Stills for just under two years, display an integrity, panache and professionalism that was unanticipated by the critics, the band, or, in all probability, even Stills himself. Each side of the original double LP--now on a single CD--bore a heading which (if sometimes vaguely) classified its songs. "The Raven" (side one)--a reference to the nickname of Stills's groupie lover and muse Rita Coolidge--provides a somewhat softer, more country-rock focus. With their fiddle, pedal steel guitar, unison vocals and lyrics about the environment and Jesus, it is the songs on "The Wilderness" (side two) that set this album apart, for they are all genuine excursions into country music. "Consider" (side three) features mainly acoustic numbers. The sound of "Rock & Roll is Here to Stay" (side four) is just what you would expect from such a title, with the addition of the odd fiddle break here and there. Its centerpiece is the eight-minute guitar extravaganza "The Treasure (Take One)" where Stills gets to match the electric mayhem of former band mate Neil Young. --James Swift #Manassas

Legend of Blind Joe Death
in 1992, steven seagal starred in under siege,an action flick that grossed over $150 million worldwide. eleven years later, he starred in the foreigner,a movie with a 0% rating on rotten tomatoes. basically, this guy has come a long way — down— since the 1990s. but in addition to his messy movie career, seagal has been involved in a long string of weird incidents both behind the scenesand off the set entirely. while his career is often derided by critics, there's no denying seagal lives one wild life. steve, the on-set diva according to multiple actors, steven seagalis an incredibly difficult coworker.
john leguizamo found out the hard way. while in rehearsals for executive decision, leguizamo laughed at something seagal had said — so steven responded with an executivedecision of his own. "and he came up and he tae kwon do-ed my assagainst a brick wall. he's 6 foot 5 and caught me off guard andknocked all the air out of me. i was like, why? why?" then there's the glimmer man, where the scriptcalls for seagal's character to kill a serial murderer, played by legendary character actorstephen tobolowsky.
"am i right, or am i right, or am i right, right, right, right?" seagal decided he didn't want to kill so manypeople in movies anymore, and even tried convincing tobolowsky that his serial killer charactershould live. the scene was eventually filmed as-written,and tobolowsky's murderer met his maker. "my entire chest explodes like my heart explodes. like blood flies out of the camera. and i fall out of frame, and smoke rises." of course, as filming progressed, seagal improvisedlines about how he sure was glad he didn't kill that guy in the church.
the film's director called tobolowsky in torecord some extra dialogue to make it seem like his character's on-screen death was alittle less permanent. what'd he settle on? "i ended up shouting out 'finish me off you sonof a... come on! don't leave me like this! kill me!" breaking bond steven seagal has done quite a bit of fightchoreography.
according to imdb, most of the films he'schoreographed are his own, but in the early '80s, seagal worked on the james bond filmnever say never again, having been brought onboard to teach sean connery some aikido. meanwhile, connery was already well-versedin karate, having been awarded an honorary third-degree black belt while preparing for1967's you only live twice. connery explained what went down when thepair worked together in an interview on jay leno's tonight show in 1996: "i got a little cocky, because i thought iknew what i was doing. because you know the principle is it's defense, so it's a pyramid.
and then i go a little bit fast and i didthat and he broke my wrist." "wow" martial arts master...lousy fighter? "i have something in my pocket right now that'llcompletely clear up that bruise on your forehead." "what bruise?" "that bruise." there's no denying that steven seagal is anaccomplished martial artist. he's a legit seventh dan in aikido, a martialart that relies on joint locks and the redirection of momentum.
he was even the first american to teach aikidoin japan. but more than a few fighters think that aikidois actually kinda worthless when it comes to self-defense. fight analyst jack slack says that aikidoonly works if your "opponent is running straight at you," something most smart fighters neveractually do. ufc commentator and fighting fan joe roganadds that aikido "would never work against a trained fighter, never, not in a millionyears." mafia target steven seagal has battled all sorts of badguys on the silver screen, from terrorists
to the yakuza. but seagal has also faced some scary villainsin real life — namely the mafia. according to a new york times story from 2002,seagal was once brought before a gambino crime family captain named anthony "sonny" ciccone. the mob boss ordered him to start workingwith producer julius r. nasso, with whom he'd had a successful working relationship in the'90s before the two had a falling out. seagal was so freaked out that he gave thegangsters over half a million bucks. the scandal came to light in 2003, and nassowas sentenced to one year in federal prison. seagal's insane raid
if you couldn't tell from his filmography, steven seagal is fascinated with law enforcement. well, with the exception under siege. "are you like some special forcesguy or something?" "i'm just a cook." "a cook?" anyway, seagal actually served as a cop injefferson parish, louisiana, for about 20 years. then, in 2009, seagal took things to the nextlevel by starring in a reality show called steven seagal: lawman.
in the third season, seagal teamed up withthe controversial sheriff joe arpaio of maricopa county in arizona. in 2011, arpaio orchestrated a raid againstjesus llovera, a local man suspected of cockfighting. but when the cops showed up, they had a lotmore than just a warrant. there were up to 40 swat officers, a bombsquad, k-9 units, and even armored vehicles. "we hope to take the suspect and anybody elsewho is inside the house by surprise." and what could be more surprising than thepolice tanks that tore down the gates to llovera's property? or the damage done to parts of his house duringthe raid?
this peacock had no idea what to expect. llovera eventually pled guilty to cockfighting. and the 115 roosters that he kept at his housewere saved, right? wrong. apparently the police actually euthanizedthem all. so that's...something. sweet moves, steven with a career as varied as steven seagal's,it's important to remember that he's not just about punching, kicking, and killing lotsof chickens.
the dude also plays the guitar in a bluesband: (playing guitar) and sometimes, he does...well, whatever thisis: thanks for watching! click the grunge icon to subscribe to ouryoutube channel. plus check out all this cool stuff we knowyou'll love, too!
